Jaggi Vasudev, popularly known as Sadhguru,’ is an Indian yoga practitioner and Motivational speaker, who initially founded the ‘Isha Foundation,’ which is basically a non-profit organization that conducts yoga programs around the world. He is definitely a multi-talented and witty personality, his other avocations include, he is an author, elocutionist, philanthropist, and spiritual guide.  


Childhood or Early life:-  


Jaggi Vasudev was born on 3 September 1957 in Mysore, Karnataka, India to a Telugu speaking family. He was the youngest of four children – two boys and two girls. His father was an ophthalmologist who used to work with the ‘Indian Railways, therefore he would move frequently because of his father's work. So As his family moved frequently, In sometimes he fell in love with travelling, adventures, and also developed a curiosity to explore more. Being a curious and nature-loving child, he would spend hours often escaping from his home to nearer jungle, sometimes even days, in the wild. And there his love for snakes took birth, he realised his life-long love for snakes. As he grew young he then fell in love with motorcycles and would travel to different parts of the country on his bike.


After completing graduation, he decided to become a businessman. later because of a spiritual experience he further decided to think again about his true purpose of life at the age of 25. He eventually had self-realization about his true purpose and went to become a yoga teacher. He then started the ‘Isha Foundation’ with the purpose to offer yoga teachings. Later on, the Isha foundation engaged in several social and community development programmes and activities.


Major Works:- 

He established the worldwide known ‘Isha Foundation’. he uses Isha Foundation to conduct his yoga-related programs and commenced social and community development activities. He has the support and encouragement of more than 9 million selfless volunteers, this organization works in proper order and harmony with national and international institutions i.e. the ‘ ECOSOC which stands for The Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.’ this foundation has its warmth in all the world.


Career:-

After completing graduation Jaggi Vasudev started his career as a businessman. Jaggi was intelligent and passionately hard-working so that he could open several businesses, which includes a poultry business, and construction business. During their mid-twenties, he became a well successful businessman with the time.

It was an afternoon in September 1982, When he met with the most drastic change lf his life. He had some kind of spiritual experience that encouraged him to rethink his life. He was seated on the rock of Chamundi hills where he had such spiritual experience and which lasted for 3-4 hours.

He asked his friend to take over his legacy of the business, all of this happened within the weeks of the influence of such spiritual experience, he departed for a broad journey in the search of the meaning of his spiritual experience. After a year he realised that teaching yoga and dispersing the art and meaning of yoga is his career.

In 1983 he started offering yoga classes in Mysore, in his first yoga class, he got the participation of only about 7 people. With time he also grew his classes and started conducting yoga classes across Karnataka and Hyderabad regions. Classes were free of cost, he didn't charge even a single penny because he used to manage the expenditure from the revenue coming from poultry farms business.


He started ‘Isha Foundation,’ In 1992, which is basically a non-profit and spiritual practice organization that primarily organises yoga-related programs. It was established near Coimbatore, in upcoming year after establishment, this foundation was admired all over the world and still growing. it offers yoga programs in India, the US, Singapore, China, Australia, and many more other countries all welcoming them. 


‘The Foundation’ also works for several social and community development programmes and activities. In 2003, it has also established a multi-phased program named ‘Action for Rural Rejuvenation (ARR), which works for improving the overall health and quality of life in the rural area of rural people. This program is started with the purpose of overall development and improvement of all the village areas across Tamil Nadu, India.

Later in Tamil Nadu in 2004 the foundation started an initiative name the ‘Project Green Hands’ (PGH), it is basically an ecological and environmental initiative. The main aim of this project is a plantation of 114 million or more trees throughout the Tamil Nadu region to increase the forest cover in the state so that environment may become peaceful and healthy for the people living there.


He has been a worldwide known prolific speaker also addressed people at the ‘United Nations Millennium World Peace Summit.’ his speeches are preferred at various platforms and events being organised around the world. He has also addressed at the ‘World Economic Forum’ in consecutive 4 years 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009.

His other passions include being an author, he has written over 100 titles surprisingly in eight different languages. He is also a splendid poet and whose composition of poems are full of love and peace he prefers writing in his vacant time.

In 2017, Jaggi launched a campaign named ‘Rally for Rivers,’ with the aim to solve problems caused by the increasing scarcity of water and rivers pollution. In the same year on the occasion of Adiyogi shiva statue inauguration program at Isha Foundation, the PM of India appeared to inaugurated the 112 foot Shiva Statue which was designed by Jaggi Vasudev.

Awards & Achievements

June 2012 When his ‘Project Green Hands’ (PGH) was felicitated by the ‘Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar’ by the Govt. of India in In 2012.

In 2010 he was also considered as one of the 100  powerful Indians by ‘The Indian Express’ because of his contribution in this field (environmental protection and for encouraging the public's participation in ecological problems).

in 2017 he was awarded the most prestigious ‘Padma Vibhushan,’ which is India's second-highest civilian award, he was awarded this in recognition of his contribution in the field of spirituality, by the Government of India. 

In 2019, by ‘India Today's data he ranked 40th in the ‘50 most powerful Indians’ list. 


Personal Life & Legacy

In 1984, Sadguru aka Jaggi Vasudev married Vijaya Kumari and was blessed with a daughter named Radhe. Unfortunately, Kumari died on 23 December 1997. Kumari's father alleged Vasudev had murdered her, and then Vasudev avowed that Kumari had told him 9 months before her death that she is gonna attain mahasamadhi . Their daughter Radhe is a trained Bharatanatyam dancer and she married  Sandeep Narayan who is a classical vocalist at Sadguru's ashram in Coimbatore.


What Can We Learn from His Life:-

1. Don’t talk about anything that you've never experienced:-


Don't say something which you have never experienced, it'll only lead them towards delusions and misunderstandings, something which is not in your experience list, doesn't allow you the authority and confidence to talk about it in order to prevent everyone from delusions.

2.Look at what binds you:-

Understand the fact that things that hold you at your past are obstacles to the path or being better self, get rid of what binds you take proper care to make yourself free of such negative bonds.

3. Change yourself, before you try to change everyone else:-

In order to change the world, you need to change yourself, changing everyone is not in your power but changing self is. 

4. Your actions should be conscious, not compulsive:- 
Drive your life by yourself don't let the autopilot mode drive it, which means observe your actions make them with consciousness and don't let compulsion take you over. For a better life adopt conscious behaviour.
